The Ganga River flood has prompted IIT Kharagpur to initiate inspection activities aimed at mitigating erosion risks in the coastal regions. This project, affected by local climate and geography, aims to ensure the safety of 1,050 people living along the banks of the Ganga. Through sampling, the current erosion status is being assessed, and new technical designs are being proposed with the support of the World Bank. The initiative also targets the Malda and Murshidabad areas, where several villages are facing threats from erosion. It is imperative that effective measures be implemented swiftly to counteract these dangers. Historically, the condition of the Ganga river's coastal region was stable, but recent changes have led to heightened risks. The rising water levels near the river, coupled with flooding and climate change, are increasingly threatening these coastal habitats. With IIT Kharagpur's involvement in protective measures, a positive impact on the Ganga's coastal area is anticipated, alongside assured safety for local residents against erosion threats.
