Bajaj Auto Unveils First CNG Motorbike in India

On March 15, 2023, Bajaj Auto made headlines by introducing its groundbreaking motorcycle powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). This innovation comes amidst growing concerns over the increasing air pollution caused by the 250 million two-wheelers on India’s roads. CNG offers a cleaner and cost-effective fuel alternative compared to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel, making it a desirable option for environmentally-conscious consumers. The design process posed unique challenges due to the limited space available on motorcycles for the heavy and bulky CNG cylinders. Bajaj has creatively integrated a 2 kg CNG cylinder, weighing 15 kilos, along with an auxiliary fuel tank to ensure riders are never stranded. This dual-fuel approach allows riders to significantly reduce their running costs while lowering harmful emissions. However, the timing of this launch raises questions, especially with the Indian government pushing for an 80% transition to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. Renowned bike reviewer Shumi commented on the potential competition between CNG bikes and EVs, suggesting that a transition this large would face significant hurdles, given the current state of infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities. The emergence of CNG bikes, therefore, presents an immediate remedy to India’s pollution woes while the shift towards electric is still gaining momentum.
