Issues in Korean Beef Track and Trace System

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, recent investigations led by Representative Lee Byung-jin revealed discrepancies in the tracking numbers of a Two Plus Hanwoo gift set. When the tracking number displayed on the packaging was verified, it did not match the actual grade of the beef. It has come to light that the beef claimed to be of Two Plus grade may not meet the standards or may not actually be Hanwoo beef. The tracking number, a 12-digit code assigned at slaughter, is intended to allow consumers to check the grade and origin of the beef. However, if false tracking numbers are issued, this system becomes ineffective. In the past year and early this year, 408 and 215 cases of false tracking numbers, respectively, have been identified. Despite the seriousness of the issue, many offenders face only fines, leading them to repeat their violations. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has announced plans to strengthen enforcement and implement strict management policies for offending companies.
