On the morning of last Sunday, Novo Hamburgo in Rio Grande do Sul experienced a family tragedy that left five dead and at least eight wounded. Edson Cripa, a 45-year-old man diagnosed with schizophrenia, opened fire on family members and the police in an intense shootout that lasted about nine hours. The chaos began when his father, 74-year-old EugΓͺnio Cripa, reported Edson, who had kept his family trapped at home after a heated argument. Upon arrival, police were met with gunfire. During the assault, Edson killed a police officer and injured others amid the relentless shooting, totaling over 300 shots fired. In addition to the tragedy, many questions have arisen regarding the legality of gun ownership by individuals with a history of psychiatric issues. Despite undergoing several hospitalizations, Edson still legally owned two handguns, a shotgun, and a rifle. Following the incident, the Federal Police launched an investigation to understand how Edson obtained authorization to possess the weapons. This situation raises alarms about the need for revisions in policies regarding gun ownership, particularly among those suffering from mental disorders.
